Structural Heart Symposium for Cardiac Surgeons

Boston, MA US
October 11, 2019 to October 12, 2019

The field of cardiac surgery is undergoing significant change with the rapid development and acceptance of catheter-based technologies. Completed and ongoing trials in the aortic- and mitral-valve spaces are likely to influence procedural guidelines in the coming years. Because cardiac surgeons have traditionally had little formal training in catheter-based skills, there is concern regarding their ability to actively participate in these procedures. There is a significant need for mechanisms by which cardiac surgeons can attain the knowledge and skills necessary to participate meaningfully in catheter-based procedures.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for practicing cardiac surgeons and cardiac surgery trainees who are interested in becoming more involved in trans-catheter procedures.

Given that trans-catheter approaches such as TAVR are relatively new, they have traditionally been concentrated to highly specialized centers with only 1-2 cardiac surgeons participating at each institution. As the guidelines for use of trans-catheter therapies are expanded there is an increasing number of centers and surgeons who are interested in learning these techniques. The program will serve as a basic introduction to the knowledge and skills required to participate meaningfully within the “Heart Team” model. The activity is not intended for surgeons with substantial experience in performing trans-catheter procedures.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the processes for patient selection and work-up prior to a basic transcatheter valve procedure.
  2. Demonstrate the basic technical skills needed to perform a straight-forward transcatheter valve procedure.
  3. Describe the considerations for choosing the correct valve, size, and access methods in transcatheter valve procedures.
