Engaging Multifaceted Patients

Providing quality care to diverse populations requires that we are skilled in communicating with patients from different social and cultural backgrounds, including accounting for social and environmental factors that influence their individual health and how they access healthcare. This session will provide a practical, actionable framework that allows caregivers to better understand and address cross-cultural challenges as they communicate and care for patients. This includes discussing the limitations of a cultural “competence” approach and other ways to recognize that culture matters including cultural humility and social and structural determinants of health. You will also have an opportunity to hear from community health workers as they share their strategies for engagement, patients’ perceptions and barriers that impact their care.
