2015 Pediatric End of Life Issues: Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning

This one hour activity will discuss the role of pediatric palliative care and who is eligible. Specific tools are provided to empower the clinician to initiate end of life care discussions with patients and their families, aid the family in advance care planning, and support the family after the death of their child. Concepts will be illustrated through real interviews depicting families’ struggles with end of life care. Videos were produced by the courageous parents network.

This online interactive educational activity is designed to meet the criteria for risk management study in Massachusetts,including credit for end of life care while providing clinicians with practical knowledge which can be applied to their day to day practice. Information is geared specifically towards the treatment of pediatric patients and their families.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for pediatric practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the role of pediatric palliative care 
2. Select patients who would benefit from pediatric palliative care services and describe resources available to families 
3. Demonstrate an increased ability to initiate and discuss end of life issues with patients and their families

Ben Nelson, MDCourse Director
Massachusetts General Hospital for Children 
Dr. Nelson received his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his pediatric residency and pulmonary fellowship at MGH. He is currently a board certified pediatric pulmonologist. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he is the program director for the pediatric pulmonary fellowship at MGHfC and the associate director for continuing medical education. 

Pat O’Malley, MD 
Massachusetts General Hospital for Children 
Dr. O’Malley is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and pediatric palliative care. She is the pediatric emergency department unit chief emerita at MGH, and now serves as the medical director for pediatric palliative care services at MGHfC.
