MGH Short-term Mechanical Support Heart/Lung Symposium 2020

October 23, 2020 to October 24, 2020

This virtual course involves didactic lectures, debates, video presentations, and case discussions. Interactive online/direct discussions/questions are provided. Lectures primarily involve presentation of scientific data relevant to ECLS and ex vivo organ preservation. Case presentations of the different forms of ECLS will allow attendees to participate and get the input and perspective of their disciplines.

ECMO hands-on cannulation/initiation and decannulation will be taught on videos. Scenarios will address the fundamentals of such devices as well as common and uncommon complications and challenges through the entire perioperative period including planning for surgery and preoperative evaluation, interoperative management, and postoperative critical care issues.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for Cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensive care physicians and nurses, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, biomedical technologists, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe an Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) circuit including pumps, filters, tubing, safety monitors, oxygenators, heating and cooling elements, and different variations in the set up
  2. Recognize and explain the different types of cannulae and cannulation strategies for patients undergoing (ECLS).
  3. Describe and initiate (ECLS). Recognize and manage potential disasters that can occur during (ECLS). Recognize the indications (ECLS). Manage common complications associated with the institution of (ECLS). Interpret hemodynamic data for patients with short-term support
  4. Prepare a patient for safe separation from short-term support through use of a checklist
  5. Discuss the management of right heart failure after cardiopulmonary bypass and in the intensive care unit
  6. Manage problems associated with short-term support
  7. Discuss problems in the intensive care unit with C-mags and ECMO
  8. Describe the basics of ex vivo organ preservation
