Pediatric Respiratory Emergencies: Croup and Bronchiolitis

This third webinar/module in a three-part series is pertinent to the care of pediatric emergencies including COVID patients.

The Pediatric Emergencies content is extensive and the decision was made to address the most common emergency, respiratory distress for this webinar. Croup and Bronchiolitis were selected by the experts Dr. Mick and Dr. Sawyer. The remaining common pediatric emergencies are; dehydration, anaphylaxis, seizures and trauma. The content may be presented at a later date depending upon the interest of those who register for this webinar.

NATHAN W. MICK, MD, FACEP

Dr. Nathan W. Mick is the current President of the Maine Medical Center Medical Staff. He is the Vice Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Mick received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Notre Dame followed by his M.D. at Duke University School of Medicine. After medical school, Dr. Mick did residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine residency followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital.

After completing training, he took a faculty position at Maine Medical Center as the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 2005.

 

SUSAN SAWYER, MD, PHD, CPNP

Professor Susan Sawyer is a full professor in the School of Nursing at Regis College in Weston, Ma.   She received her Master of Science Degree at Boston University followed by her PhD in nursing at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.    

Professor Sawyer is the author of the textbook Pediatric Physical Examination and Health Assessment which is used in graduate nursing education.  She was also instrumental in developing the nurse practitioner program at Regis College and is currently a practicing pediatric nurse practitioner.   

Professor Sawyer served on the Institutional Review Board at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for a number of years providing guidance from a community nurse perspective.  She continues to promote healthcare for underserved women and children through mission trips to Kentucky, Haiti and Guatemala.
