9th Annual Stepping Strong Trauma Research and Innovation Symposium

November 19, 2026

This is a live, hybrid activity.

The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation catalyzes trauma innovation for injured civilians and military heroes, through multidisciplinary investigative collaborations across the continuum of trauma care, from prevention to treatment and recovery. The ninth annual Stepping Strong Symposium will begin with Stepping Strong Breakthrough Award finalist presentations including an opportunity for audience members to contribute to the selection of the 2026 Stepping Strong Breakthrough Awardee. After the presentations, there will be a panel discussion consisting of leaders in military and civilian trauma care, followed by a keynote presentation by Colonel Martin Schreiber highlighting military and civilian trauma readiness, and conclude with a reception.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for clinicians, researchers, healthcare administration, and public health professionals from multiple disciplines including trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, emergency medical services, health systems research, public health research, and basic science research.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe at least two evidence-based advances in military trauma care (e.g., hemorrhage control, prehospital resuscitation, rapid evacuation protocols) and evaluate their applicability to civilian trauma settings.
  2. Identify the essential elements of civilian trauma systems that inform military readiness planning for future combat casualty care.
  3. Apply updated hemorrhage control and mass casualty triage principles in clinical or field practice to reduce preventable trauma mortality.
  4. Collaborate effectively across civilian and military professional roles (physicians, nurses, prehospital providers, and military medical personnel) to coordinate a unified response during a mass casualty or trauma event.
  5. Integrate lessons learned from combat casualty care into institutional protocols and training programs to strengthen civilian-military trauma system readiness.
