Asking About and Documenting Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Information in Epic

Epic users who document encounters with patients can document Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Sex Assigned at Birth, Pronoun, and Preferred Name (SOGI) information in a patient's record. This course provides the following information for clinician, registration, Emergency Department registration, and front desk roles: 

  1. Why we collect SOGI
  2. How to ask for SOGI (scripting)
  3. How to enter SOGI into Epic
  4. Service recovery if a mistake is made when collecting SOGI

Target Audience

Clinical, registration, Emergency Department registration, and front desk Epic users.

Learning Objectives

    1. Ask every patient at start of workflow for sexual orientation, gender identity, sex assigned at birth, pronouns, and preferred name.
    2. Document SOGI information in Epic for registrar, front desk, and clinical roles.
    3. Apply appropriate SOGI terminology when speaking with patients and visitors.
    4. Use SOGI-inclusive scripting in your workflows for all patients.
    5. Answer questions or requests patients have related to collecting SOGI information.
    6. Practice service recovery if a mistake is made.
