ForwardModule 4: Legal, Ethical & Professional Standards - What Do I Need to Know?
This module will provide the learner with an overview of the legal, ethical and professional practice standards that influence, guide and inform the role of the registered nurse, preceptor and clinical nurse educator. Information and resources for the Maine Nurse Practice, the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice, the Association for Nursing Professional Development’s Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses are included. The preceptor’s role when delegating, supervising and evaluating new graduate nurses, nursing students and unlicensed nursing personnel is detailed. The hallmark of nursing care in the provision for patient safety is spotlighted. Interactive learning strategies are incorporated into the module to afford the learner the opportunity to recall and relate the information from the module to practice.

Target Audience
This program is intended for Registered Nurses assuming the preceptor role and Clinical Nurse Educators working in partnership with their preceptors.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Review the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Registered Nurse, as outlined in the Maine State Nurse Practice Act.
- Explore the Code of Ethics for Nurses and its application to the role of the preceptor and clinical nurse educator.
- Differentiate nursing responsibilities when precepting a novice nurse, unlicensed personnel and a student nurse.
- Identify the five rights of delegation

Joseph F. Carter, RN, MSN, MDiv.
Joseph F. Carter, RN, MSN, MDiv. received his BSN and MSN from the University of Southern Maine. He received his Master of Divinity from The Catholic University of America. His nursing practice has focused in the areas of Adult Health, Nursing Management, Spirituality and Health Care, End of Life and Hospice Care. He currently is an associate clinical professor at the University of New England. He joined UNE in 2004, and in 2006 became the Clinical Coordinator. In addition to his faculty role, as the clinical coordinator he oversees all clinical rotations and preceptorship placements for students in the nursing program at the university.
He maintains his clinical practice at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He is a Maine native and currently resides in Portland. In his spare time, he enjoys music, reading and traveling.
Susan McLeod, MSN, RN-BC
Susan B. McLeod, MSN, RN-BC, is currently the Director of Outpatient Education at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, Maine. The Outpatient Education department serves the interdisciplinary staff of 42 primary and specialty ambulatory care practices. She has been practicing nursing for 34 years in multiple clinical areas including critical care, emergency department, and medical surgical. She has been in education for 25 years.
She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Southern Maine in 1984 and her master’s degree in nursing education from Kaplan University in 2017. She currently serves on the Advisory Boards for Kennebec Valley Community College School of Nursing and Medical Assistant programs. She is passionate about mentoring and supporting new nurses and student nurses into the profession as part of the interdisciplinary team.
Rebecca Thompson MSN, RN
Rebecca Thompson MSN, RN is currently a Clinical Informatics Specialist at MaineGeneral Medical Center. Rebecca completed both her associate and baccalaureate degrees in nursing at the University of New England and her master’s degree in nursing at Kaplan University. She has been nurse for twenty years working inpatient medical surgical nursing, critical care nursing and the last six years in nursing education. In the past, she has also worked as adjunct clinical faculty for Kennebec Valley Community College, the University of Maine, Augusta and Kaplan University. In her current role, Rebecca works with staff in the ambulatory setting offering education and support for the electronic medical record. Her passion is to mentor and train nurses to use technology to enhance their everyday practice.
The Maine Nursing Preceptor Education Program including the on-line learning webinars and the live workshop is approved for 13.5 nursing contact hours. Nursing contact hours will be provided to learners who complete the following program requirements: completion of all 8 modules, attendance and active participation during the workshops, and completion of an online workshop evaluation. Please note: Following the live workshop, learners will receive an email to a workshop evaluation. Nursing contact hours for program completion will be emailed following completion and submission of the workshop evaluation.
The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development at Massachusetts General Hospital is approved with distinction as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Ohio Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation (OBN-001-91)
Criteria for successful completion include: registration and check-in at the program, attendance of no less than 80% of the event, completion of any assigned pre and/or post work, attestation statement when required, and activity evaluation. Certificate with contact hours will then be delivered electronically.
