Sound Beginnings to Lifelong Hearing: A Clinical Update on Hearing Health from Childhood to Adulthood

The two hour presentation from two otolaryngologists and two audiologists from Mass Eye and Ear in Boston will cover best practices and latest research for the prevention and treatment of common hearing concerns seen in children, adolescents, adults and older adults, including:

  • Hearing loss in children
  • Chronic ear infections in children
  • Audiologic considerations in children
  • Review of common otologic conditions
  • Diagnosis and management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss
  • New concepts in the diagnosis and management of tinnitus
  • Noise related hearing loss – an audiologic perspective
  • What is new with hearing aids?
  • Dementia and hearing loss

The content will be geared to pediatricians, internal and family medicine physicians and geriatricians in Bermuda. Decision making in when to consult and refer patients with complex hearing needs will also be part of the program.

Target Audience

This course in intended for pediatricians, internal and family medicine physicians, and geriatricians practicing in Bermuda.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize early signs of hearing loss and chronic ear infections in children and refer appropriately to specialists.
  2. Apply current guidelines in the evaluation and management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus.
  3. Integrate audiologic perspectives, including pediatric testing and noise-induced hearing loss prevention, into primary care.
  4. Counsel patients and families on new developments in hearing aids and rehabilitation strategies.
  5. Collaborate as an interprofessional team (physicians, audiologists, surgeons) to optimize patient outcomes across the lifespan.

Course Director

Daniel J. Lee, MD, FACS

Daniel Lee MD is the Ansin Foundation Chair in Otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE) and Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School. He is the Director of Pediatric Ear, Hearing, and Balance Center and Program Director of the Harvard Neurotology Surgical Fellowship.

Dr. Lee is also Director of International Patient Services in the Department of Otolaryngology at Mass Eye and Ear.

He has a surgical expertise in pediatric cochlear and auditory brainstem implants, endoscopic ear surgery for cholesteatoma, vestibular schwannoma, and superior canal dehiscence syndrome. His research focus is on the development of new auditory implant technologies and gene therapy for pediatric hearing loss.

 

Speakers

David T. Martin, MD, FRCP

David Martin is the Medical Director of the International Patient Services Division of the Mass General Brigham System, and Vice-Chair in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Dr Martin trained in medicine at University College London and the Royal London Hospitals in England, and in cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He maintains an active academic practice of clinical cardiac electrophysiology and attends in general cardiology and internal medicine at BWH. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians and has received the Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Distinguished Clinician Award.

During his training in the UK and the US, Dr Martin worked as a locum GP in Bermuda and has developed a deep affection for the Island and its medical community. He continues to be a regular visitor and works to leverage the resources of Mass General Brigham in the service of optimal medical care for all Bermudians.

Dr Martin is also the President of Project Pacer International, a Boston-based charity providing cardiology care to indigent patients around the world. In this capacity he has a 30-year history of working in Bolivia managing patients with complex cardiac problems resulting from Chagas disease. This work was recognized in 2021 by the honor of the Heart Rhythm Society’s Global Humanitarian Award.

Elliott D. Kozin, MD

Dr. Kozin a fellowship trained and board-certified otolaryngologist specializing in adult and pediatric otology and neurotology. His clinical interests include the surgical management of chronic ear disease, such as cholesteatomas and tympanic membrane perforations, conductive hearing loss, cochlear implantation, and tumors of the lateral skull base. Dr. Kozin also performs endoscopic ear surgery for a variety of surgical conditions and regularly lectures on the subject.

Meaghan Reed, AUD, CCC-A

Dr. Meaghan Reed is the Director of Clinical Audiology at Mass Eye and Ear, where she oversees a large team across 15 sites. With over 20 years of experience, she’s passionate about expanding access to hearing care and has helped lead the way in bringing over-the-counter hearing aid options into both clinical settings and the community. She’s also been a strong advocate for unbundled care models that improve transparency and patient choice. In addition to her clinical leadership, Dr. Reed teaches at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and regularly speaks at national conferences on hearing healthcare innovation.

Rupal Bhakta, Au.D., CCC-A

Dr. Bhakta is the Audiologist Manager and Senior Audiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, where she provides comprehensive hearing care to patients across the lifespan, with a special focus on pediatrics. With over 11 years of clinical experience and two years in a leadership role, Dr. Bhakta brings a deep commitment to patient-centered care, team development, and advancing audiological services within a leading academic medical center.
