Faculty Education in Perioperative Point-of-Care Ultrasound: A Hands-on Skills Session
This is an in-person activity.
This faculty education workshop is a hands-on program designed to enhance clinician competence and confidence in performing and teaching gastric and neuraxial point of care ultrasound (POCUS). The activity will include two high-yield didactic sessions followed by small-group, expert faculty-led live scanning stations using human models. The course emphasizes practical anatomy, image acquisition, interpretation, clinical integration, and teaching strategies, with a focus on improving perioperative risk assessment, patient safety, and educational consistency across clinical sites.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for anesthesiology faculty across the Mass General Brigham system.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify key sonoanatomic landmarks relevant to gastric and neuraxial ultrasound.
- Perform gastric ultrasound to assess gastric contents and aspiration risk in perioperative patients.
- Perform neuraxial ultrasound to optimize needle insertion site selection and procedural success.
- Integrate ultrasound findings into perioperative clinical decision-making.
- Apply effective strategies to teach and supervise gastric and neuraxial ultrasound skills in trainees.
