This activity is intended for any healthcare professional interested in talking to patients about alcohol use.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe how alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic disease and managed like other chronic diseases.
- List which medications are FDA-indicated and those used off-label with supporting evidence for the treatment of patients with AUD.
- Detail how to develop a treatment and monitoring plan for use of medications for AUD (MAUD).

![]() | Mark Publicker, MD, DFASM, DABAMMark Publicker, MD, has practiced addiction medicine for more than 30 years and is a nationally recognized leader in the field. He is the immediate past president of the Northern New England Society of Addiction Medicine, a past president of the Virginia and Pennsylvania Societies of Addiction Medicine, and editor-in-chief of the American Society of Addiction Medicine magazine. Dr. Publicker is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. A respected educator and advocate for evidence-based addiction treatment, Dr. Publicker has taught addiction medicine in China and helped develop a treatment program for drug-addicted homeless boys in Turkey. In 2009, he was named “Caregiver of the Year” by the Maine Hospital Association, and in 2014, Down East magazine recognized him as Maine’s “Top Doctor in Addiction Medicine.” Lunder-Dineen is honored to collaborate with Dr. Publicker to advance evidence-based education on substance use and addiction. |
