
Mass General Brigham's Office of Continuing Professional Development is creating a course to help residents prepare for the USMLE Step 3 Exam. We are working to customize this course to ensure it's the most helpful to the residents preparing to take the USMLE Step 3 Exam. The Test-Prep Course will be available in October 2026.
This website is meant to collect ideas/topics we should include in the content of our Test-Prep Course, outline the format of the USMLE Step Exam, and provide references for the tuition reimbursement process and policies.

USMLE Step 3 Exam Format
- Two-day exam
- Day 1:
- Approximately 7 hours
- 232 multiple-choice items divided into 12 blocks of 18-20 items
- Focuses on foundations of independent practice
- Day 2:
- Approximately 9 hours
- 180 multiple-choice items, divided into 9 blocks of 20 items
- 13 to 14 case simulations, each of which is allotted a maximum of 10 or 20 minutes
- Focuses on advanced clinical medicine and computer-based case simulations.

- You should register for your USMLE Step 3 Exam at least 3-6 months prior to when you'd like to take the exam to ensure you can take the exam at a nearby location.
- How much will the Test-Prep Course cost?
- The tuition for the Test-Prep Course will be $375.00
- How can I be reimbursed for USMLE Step 3 test prep and exam fees?
- To receive reimbursement for the test-bank questions used for studying (such as UWorld), you must complete the test-prep course we are launching in October.
- The test-prep course we are launching in October will also be reimbursable.
- To receive reimbursement for the USMLE Step 3 Exam, the test prep course, and any question banks, you will need to pass the exam.
