August 27, 2024 We Are Upstanders 2.0: Developing Skills for Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Healthcare

In this session with facilitators and participants, this introductory course provides participants with an understanding of the dimensions of diversity and intersectionality. Participants will examine microaggressions and other forms of harm pertaining to multiple aspects of identity. Participants will better understand the lasting impact of these harmful behaviors and discuss strategies for repair when they occur. Participants will explore how serving as an upstander can cultivate community, collaboration, and healing. Participants will also review the patient, family, visitor, research participant code of conduct, explore case studies, and construct strategies for supporting each other in addressing problematic behaviors.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for employees internal to Mass General Brigham, of all specialties.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe why it is necessary to intervene when patients or staff commit acts of racism or discrimination.
  • Describe different techniques to intervene when patients or staff commit acts of racism or discrimination.
  • Determine how to apply the MGB Patient/Family Code of Conduct and its SAFER Model approach to situations when patients, family members, or visitors act or speak in ways that are racist or otherwise discriminatory.
  • Determine how to apply Know the Line policies when staff members act or speak in ways that are racist or otherwise discriminatory.
