The Tools of the Trade: Steps in Providing Oral Health Care webinar is the second webinar in a series of four webinars. It is part of the MOTIVATE (Maine’s Oral Team-Based Initiative: Vital Access to Education) blended learning program.

The statement “The mouth is the gateway to the body” has been used many times to highlight the connection between good oral health care and overall good health. Should germs grow untreated in the mouth and lead to infections of the teeth, gums and the lining of the mouth, those germs cause problems for the resident not only with eating, drinking, swallowing and talking, but the germs may also spread to other parts of the body. This webinar provides information for the learner about: the best approaches to use when examining the oral cavity, the importance of saliva in maintaining oral health, the causes of and treatment for dry mouth and the care of the resident’s teeth, gums, dentures and removable dental appliances. The value of team based oral health care is spotlighted in this module. Sections of the “Growing Old with a Smile: Oral Care for Older Adults in Long-Term Care” video developed by the Minnesota Department of Health and the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota have also been included in the webinar.

Target Audience

This program is intended for interprofessional team members.
