Health Care Leadership Program (HCLP) 2026-2027
This activity is accessible by invitation only.
Now in its third year, the Healthcare Leadership Program (HCLP) builds on the success of its first two cohorts, which were met with exceptional enthusiasm and strong evaluations.
Jointly developed by the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) and the Brigham and Women's Physicians Organization (BWPO), the program represents a strategic integration of two legacy leadership initiatives, and is now administratively housed within MGB’s Center for Academic Development and Enrichment (CADE). This collaborative effort aims to develop the next generation of leaders across the Mass General Brigham system.
The HCLP is designed to equip physician and non-physician leaders with the skills necessary to navigate increasing complexity within academic medical centers. The curriculum emphasizes core competencies in organizational leadership, operations and financial management, and strategic thinking grounded in the real-world challenges of healthcare delivery.
It serves physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, research faculty, and senior administrators from across BWH and MGH.
Each year, up to 46 participants are selected to engage in monthly, four-hour sessions. The program has quickly become one of the most sought-after leadership experiences within the system, consistently earning outstanding feedback and generating a substantial waitlist.
Participants are nominated by Department Chairs, Service Chiefs, or senior MGPO/BWPO leaders. Nominations are reviewed by the Executive Sponsor Committee, which invites a subset of individuals to apply.
Using data from the MGH Professional Staff Office, a preliminary list of physicians with administrative titles is compiled and supplemented by those who have expressed interest. Chiefs of Service and Vice Presidents are then asked to review and prioritize candidates.
Final selections are made based on applicants' demonstrated commitment, readiness to engage, and the goal of assembling a diverse, cross-functional cohort representing a range of clinical and operational areas.
The program covers a broad array of topics, including systems-based leadership, financial strategy, quality and safety, and health system innovation. In addition to strengthening individual capabilities, the HCLP seeks to build institutional capacity—cultivating a prepared, agile, and collaborative network of leaders equipped to advance the mission of Mass General Brigham.
