Managing Enteric Fistulas: Integrating NPWT & Pouching for Optimal Outcomes
This is a hybrid activity.
This lecture will provide an overview of enteric fistula management using Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and pouching systems. Participants will learn to assess and classify fistulas, implement effective containment strategies, and develop patient-centered management plans. The session includes practical guidance on treatment selection, complication management, and interdisciplinary collaboration to support optimal healing and improved patient outcomes.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for nurses within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the pathophysiology of enteric fistulas, including causes, types, and healing processes.
- Assess enteric fistulas by evaluating output, tissue condition, and potential complications.
- Develop a management plan that includes wound care, nutritional support, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Employ containment strategies using NPWT and pouching systems to support healing and protect skin integrity.
