MGH Department of Medicine Annual Teaching Faculty Retreat 2023

A Shared Language: Practical Ways to Formalize Clinical Reasoning Based Precepting

This activity is part of ongoing faculty development for all faculty with teaching appointments in the Department of Medicine. This fall’s session is designed to expose faculty to the Clinical Reasoning curriculum being delivered to the residents, with the goal of empowering faculty to highlight and reinforce these principles when teaching/precepting in their clinical settings. We expect that teaching faculty will have pre-existing knowledge of these core concepts but we would like to ensure we’re employing a shared language in educational settings across the department. We’ll also share strategies for teaching faculty to effectively incorporate explicit clinical reasoning teaching in their practice.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for all MGH Department of Medicine teaching faculty (inpatient and outpatient).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Review how core clinical reasoning principles are being taught to our internal medicine residents.
  2. Employ a shared language for discussing core clinical reasoning concepts when teaching/precepting trainees.
  3. Apply strategies to incorporate explicit clinical reasoning teaching when working with trainees.
