MGH Effective Strategies for Lipid & Obesity Management in Primary Care - Archived

This recorded activity will review strategies for lipid and obesity management in primary care. Discussion will focus on effective lifestyle interventions and medication therapy options, including use of GLP-1 and non-GLP-1 medications in management of obesity.  Participants applied what they learned during a case study discussion at the end of the session.   

Target Audience

This activity is intended for Primary Care Physicians and APPs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of lifestyle interventions on both lipid management and weight reduction.
  2. Discuss effectiveness of medication therapy in lipid management and understand the novel approaches to medication therapy for patients who are statin intolerant or not meeting goals with statin therapy alone.
  3. Employ appropriate lipid management strategies with patients based on age and other risk factors and understand when and how to utilize risk stratification tools such as coronary calcium scoring and lipoprotein.
  4. Describe functions and indications of GLP-1 and non-GLP-1 medications in management of obesity.
  5. Utilize weight loss medications appropriately, including initiating medications and adjusting dosage as needed.
  6. Evaluate patient appropriateness for surgical weight loss interventions.
  7. Discuss the role and function of each member of the care team in educating patients about their treatment.
