Module 1: Understanding & Teaching the Mechanisms of Asthma

Review the symptoms of asthma, triggers of asthma, and the dual underlying processes of airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in asthma.  Identify some of the key cellular and chemical constituents of asthma.  Contrast asthma with COPD and other airway diseases.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Have a better understanding of the biology of asthma.
  2. Be able to explain the concept of airway hyperreactivity in asthma.
  3. Distinguish asthma from other obstructive lung diseases.
