Module 2: Diagnosis & Assessment of Asthma

Review how a diagnosis of asthma is made, including characteristic symptoms, physical findings, and lung function measurement.  Assess asthma severity based on symptoms, lung function, and frequency of asthma exacerbations.  Consider possible causes of poorly controlled asthma.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of pulmonary function testing in the diagnosis of asthma.

  2. Be able to distinguish asthma severity and asthma control.

  3. Identify stimuli that may contribute to poorly controlled asthma.
