Module 3: Introduction to Pulmonary Function Testing

We will review proper performance of spirometry and basic interpretation of the results, with an emphasis on recognizing the pattern of expiratory airflow obstruction.  The value of peak flow monitoring will be discussed, and differences between spirometry and peak flow measurements highlighted.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Distinguish medications that primarily effect bronchodilation from those that primarily suppress inflammation.
  2. Become aware of the recommended step-care approach to asthma to achieve good asthma control.
  3. Becoming acquainted with the new category of medications called monoclonal antibodies ("biologics") used to treat asthma.
