Module 4: Ambulatory Management of Asthma in the Adult
This module reviews the different medications used to treat asthma, distinguishing bronchodilators from anti-inflammatory drugs and quick-relievers from controllers. It will review the step-care approach to asthma therapy as recommended by the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program, and introduce new, targeted biologic therapies.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish medications that primarily effect bronchodilation from those that primarily suppress inflammation.
- Become aware of the recommended step-care approach to asthma to achieve good asthma control.
- Becoming acquainted with the new category of medications called monoclonal antibodies ("biologics") used to treat asthma.
