Module 6: Assessing & Managing Allergic Sensitivities

This module addresses the common aeroallergens to which asthmatic patients can become sensitized.  We will explore the diagnosis of allergic sensitivity based on history and allergy testing, both skin testing and blood testing for allergen-specific immunoglobulin E levels.  Allergen mitigation techniques will be discussed in detail.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Distinguish allergic from irritant airway reactions.

  2. Understand the pros and cons of allergy skin testing vs. allergy blood (RAST) testing in asthma.

  3. Be familiar with methods to reduce allergen exposure in the home/school environment.
