Module 7: Inhalers & Other Asthma-Related Devices

We will review the different types of inhalers with demonstration of their proper use.  The addition of a “spacer” to a metered-dose inhaler will be shown and its advantages explained.  Special adaptors for very young children will be shown, for both metered-dose inhalers and nebulizers.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Instruct patients in the use of various types of inhalers (metered-dose inhalers, dry-powder inhalers, and soft-mist inhalers).

  2. Understand the role of valved holding chambers (“spacers”) in medication delivery from metered-dose inhalers.

  3. Be able to explain the pros and cons of medication delivery by nebulizer.
