Module 8: Managing Exacerbations of Asthma

The signs and symptoms of an asthma attack will be reviewed, with emphasis on early recognition and appropriate action.  We will review the treatment of asthma attacks with frequent administration of bronchodilators and, when needed, early administration of systemic corticosteroids.  The potential for patient education regarding the prevention of severe asthma attacks will be emphasized.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Be able to help patients recognize asthma attacks based on symptoms and, if available, peak flow measurements.

  2. Identify treatment escalation options that can be begun in the home environment during the initial phases of an asthma attack.

  3. Recognize signs of a severe, potentially life-threatening asthma attack.
