Module 9: Developing an Asthma Action Plan

The asthma action plan is a culmination of asthma education and provides an opportunity for teaching about recognizing asthma attacks and implementing early treatment escalation.  We will emphasize the ready availability of action plan forms in multiple languages and in low-literacy formats.  Sample completed asthma action plans will be discussed.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of a written asthma action plan in helping patients/their caregivers manage asthma, including attacks of asthma.

  2. Describe to patients/their caregivers the “traffic light model” of judging the severity of an asthma attack and responding accordingly.

  3. Identify various asthma action plan forms readily available via the internet and many electronic health record systems.
