November 19, 2025 MGB Interprofessional In-Situ Simulation Drills for Peri-Procedural Care 2025-2026

November 19, 2025

In-situ simulation drills across all peri- and intra-procedural settings - including operating rooms, preoperative holding bays, interventional radiology, endoscopy, cardiac catheterization suites, and post-procedure recover units - systematically uncover the risk factors that lead to adverse events. By recreating realistic patient crises in each environment, teams sharpen their technical proficiency and reinforce critical non-technical skills such as communication, leadership, role clarity, and resource allocation through crisis resource management training. As participants navigate these scripted emergencies, they identify specific gaps in knowledge, teamwork, equipment use, or protocol adherence; these insights then guide targeted educational workshops, policy updates, and hands-on training programs. Embedding this iterative "simulate, debrief, improve" cycle across both OR and non-OR procedural spaces not only elevates team performance during real patient crises but also meaningfully reduces patient safety risks and malpractice exposure.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, NPs, and PAs within Mass General Brigham.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Distinguish the roles, responsibilities, and perspectives of the interdisciplinary team members to assist and complement one another during a patient crisis situation.
  2. Identify technical & non-technical hazards to patient care in the corresponding unit.
  3. Identify technical, equipment or procedural issues that impact team performance.
  4. Understand some of the challenges imposed by rotational workforce inherent to academic medical centers and other patient areas that affect communication & team dynamics.
