SRN Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Dr. J. Shaughnessy Research & Education Day 2022
Rehabilitation encompasses medical and nursing care and the care given by rehabilitation therapists (physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapy), mental health professionals, and vocational specialists. Rehabilitation also involves patient and family-physician interaction; interdisciplinary teamwork and leadership; knowledge and utilization of resources; and teaching directed towards patients, other healthcare disciplines (team members), and in academic settings, medical students, residents, other faculty/staff physicians, and researchers. Physiatrists have to continually update their knowledge base in all of these areas pertaining to the patient populations they care for to maintain competence and maximize performance. Due to the accelerating numbers of research publications and resources, it can be challenging to keep abreast of all the new developments, even in one’s specialized area of expertise. This activity will expand rehabilitation education for practitioners.
