Description

Trauma, grief, and survivor guilt are expected as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten our communities. Many people are facing individual losses, including illness and death, or loss of employment. During this presentation, Rev. Angelika A. Zollfrank and Dr. Kerry James Ressler will discuss trauma, grief, and loss, as well as strategies that primary care providers and care teams can implement to support patients afflicted by the pandemic and to attend to their own self-care.

  1. Review ways in which pandemics, disasters, and war trauma impact persons, healthcare providers, and equity issues
  2. Review symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related to COVID-19 and overview of psychoeducation and resources related to these symptoms
  3. Brief review of programmatic resources available to support patients
  4. Q&A Session

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this session participants will be able to:

  1. Describe three ways in which pandemics, disasters, and war trauma impact persons, healthcare providers, and equity issues
  2. Recognize symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related to COVID-19, and be able to provide psychoeducation and resources related to these symptoms
  3. Screen patients for grief, complicated, and disenfranchised grief, as well as any spiritual/religious resources
  4. Apply strategies learned to support patients and medical teams affected by trauma, grief, and loss
  5. Locate resources for additional support.

Target Audience 

This activity is intended for Primary Care Teams managing behavioral health (care managers/behavioral health support specialists, social workers, PCPs, psychiatric consultants).
