Treating Pain in the Patient with Opioid Use Disorder

  1. Providers are required to have 3 hours of training on opioids as part of licensing requirements for the Massachusetts board of registration in medicine.
  2. Varied practice around use opioids for acute or chronic pain in the general population when not utilizing clear guidelines.
  3. Lack of knowledge and confidence in diagnosing as well as providing treatment for opioid use disorder.
  4. Suboptimal pain management in patients with opioid use disorder and acute pain leading to poor outcomes

Target Audience

This activity in intended for physicians across the Mass General Brigham system.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define opioid use disorder (OUD) and stigma in the context of OUD
  2. Identify risks associated with undertreatment of pain in hospitalized patients with OUD
  3. Utilize strategies to maximize effective pain management in patients with OUD during hospitalization and transitions of care
  4. Create pain management plans for patients with OUD that account for the pharmacologic properties of medications for OUD
