Learning objectives:
1) Under physiological conditions, alpha-synuclein is in equilibrium between a synaptic vesicle membrane-bound state and an unstructured cytosolic state
2) Alpha-synuclein membrane-binding is altered by disease-causing mutations and in the brain and gut in mouse models of PD
3) Changes in alpha-synuclein membrane-binding can be detected in PD colonic biopsies
