DESCRIPTION

This one hour online presentation will discuss the current state of the opioid crisis, starting with introductory definitions, epidemiology, and details of how the crisis impacts society.  Dr. Kurz will delve into the current state of the crisis as it relates to history, politics, society as a whole, and the medical community, and discuss how we came to be where we are in terms of the “War on Opioids.” She will then do a part on risk assessment and safe prescribing practices, briefly discuss MAT therapy, and end on a balanced, rational view on prescribing for the chronic pain population.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. To understand the current state of the Opioid Epidemic, including how we came to be here, our government’s response and medical guidelines, and the ongoing challenges.
  2. To review REMS strategies (risk evaluation and mitigation strategies) for safe opioid prescribing (a review).
  3. To understand Addiction therapy options, including MAT therapy pros/ cons.
  4. To review helpful opioid prescribing/ substance use disorder resources.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This program is intended for Physicians and other clinical staff at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
