The “Oral Health Leads to Total Health: Foundations of Oral Health Care” webinar is the first webinar in a series of four webinars. It is part of the MOTIVATE (Maine’s Oral Team-Based Initiative: Vital Access to Education) blended learning program. In 2000, the Surgeon General wrote the report: Oral Health in America. In this report, a wide group of people across different roles were asked to take action steps to improve oral health care for people of all ages. Since that time, many leading groups have made similar “calls to take action” to improve oral health care. This webinar will review the calls to action; describe how oral health supports a person’s overall health and how oral health care affects a person’s quality of life and dignity. The webinar also explains how each member of the health care team plays an important role in evaluating, planning, promoting and providing high quality oral health care for residents.

Target Audience

This program is intended for interprofessional team members.

Learning Objectives

After completing module one, each member of the oral health care team will be able to meet the following learning outcomes:

1. Summarize how regular oral health care contributes to total health care. 
2. Appreciate the affect oral health care has on a person’s quality of life, self esteem and dignity. 
3. Identify the specific oral health care role each member of the interprofessional team provides.

Taffy Davis is a clinical instructor at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Maine. She has been a registered nurse for 30 years and worked in emergency medicine, outpatient clinics and as a nurse manger of Surgical Services and Medical –Surgical units. She started her nursing career at Massachusetts General Hospital in orthopaedics.

Her interests lie in the science behind learning, as well as creating online learning for hospital based nursing. Taffy has developed an online Charge Nurse program with participation from acute care and long-term care facilities. She is currently building courses in Articulate. She has presented at the Association of Nurses in Professional Development (ANPD) 2014 annual conference on Barriers to Using Web Tools in Instructional Design and the creation of the top ten web tools list for instructional design. She is working on an online module with ANPD for a new Charge Nurse Program.

Taffy is an active member of the Association of Nurses in Professional Development and the Organization of Maine Nurse Executives-Nursing Leaders of Maine. She is a member of the Association of Talent Development and sits on the Western Maine Work Investment Board (Maine Dept. of Labor) and the University of Maine Farmington institutional review board.

Taffy is a graduate of Salem State College (now University) and completed a M.S.N. from Western Governor’s University. She has completed graduate courses in Methods of Online Learning and Foundations of Instructional Design.

Carole MacKenzie is the Professional Development Specialist for the Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine.  She brings to her role knowledge and skill sets from leadership positions across the continuum of care in academic medical center, community hospital, school health and public health settings. Prior to her appointment, she was the Director of Nursing Professional and Practice Development at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and the Director of School Health Services for the Needham Public Schools.

Carole has broad experience in developing and implementing professional development programs for nursing and interdisciplinary staff, continuous quality improvement processes, and academic and community-based partnerships, to advance health and educational initiatives. Patient and family-centered care, preceptor education and interprofessional collaborative practice are three of her areas of focus and study. Carole is a member of the Association for Nursing Professional Development.
