Her & Now’s mission is to strengthen clinician knowledge and comfort with providing menopause and midlife care to women living with HIV.

Her & Now integrates the lived experiences and perspectives of women with HIV with clinician expertise to create a comprehensive, multidisciplinary curriculum and resources.

In this session, attendees will learn about HIV-specific risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women and strategies to promote cardiovascular health throughout the menopause transition. The session will review the latest guidelines for statin use in women with HIV and discuss current FDA indications for menopausal hormone therapy in this context. Sustainable, practical approaches to optimizing nutrition to promote heart health during midlife will be explored, with consideration of food access and available resources. The session will also address the higher prevalence of tobacco use (cigarette smoking) among women with HIV, including its impact on cardiovascular health and evidence-informed strategies to support smoking cessation.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize ways in which women's risk of cardiovascular disease may be increased by a) chronic, antiretroviral-therapy treated HIV; and b) hormonal changes associated with reproductive aging.
2. List a guideline-recommended strategy for preventing cardiovascular disease in women with HIV older than 40 years.
3. Identify evidence-based nutrition and dietary strategies that support cardiovascular health during midlife, menopause, and aging with HIV, including assessment of characteristics that support sustained adherence to heart-healthy recommendations.
4. Describe the prevalence of tobacco use and health-related morbidity and mortality outcomes in people with HIV (PWH); and barriers PWH face in attempting to quite tobacco.
5. Implement evidence-based management strategies to address tobacco dependence in women with HIV.
