Activity Description
Racial, ethnic and gender inequities are prevalent throughout society, including in healthcare, but particularly in access to mental health care and resources. This series of sessions will discuss those disparities highlighting the perspectives of people of color, their interactions with the health care system, identifying its shortcomings and potential solutions that can be implemented in practice.
Learning Objectives:
The Biological Effects of Racism
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the neurophysiological components of emotion regulation and threat responses.
- Identify downstream brain and behavioral impacts of racially disproportionate stressor exposure.
- Evaluate the potential ramifications of racially disproportionate stressor exposure in childhood on adult mental health.
Stigma
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Define Racism, Stigma, Social Determinants of and Inequities in Mental Health.
- Compare and contrast the concepts of Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility.
- Identify at least one way you plan to incorporate Cultural Humility and Anti-Racist approaches in your clinical practice, education, and workplace to combat stigma in mental health.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for Mass General Brigham network clinician teams working primarily in primary care. The audience would include, physicians, nurses, social workers and other embedded clinicians and supporting roles engaged in providing care or resources for patients.
