Activity Description
Trauma is more ubiquitous than one might think, affecting health and mental health throughout the lifespan. This session will explore trauma and its impacts on mental health through a closer look at the ecological model of trauma, the Adverse Childhood Event study and expansions on this study, the role of intersectional identities and a review of resilience. Trauma-informed care will be discussed as a method to help providers and organizations effectively realize, recognize, and respond to trauma and resist re-traumatization.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Define ACEs and their impact on health and mental health.
2. Describe the ecological model of trauma and how this relates to intersectional identities.
3. Explain how to use trauma-informed care as a method to address personal, interpersonal, collective and structural traumas.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for Mass General Brigham network clinician teams working primarily in primary care. The audience would include, physicians, nurses, social workers and other embedded clinicians and supporting roles engaged in providing care or resources for patients.

Samara Grossman, MSW, LICSW is a trauma-informed educator, advocate and clinician, seeking to transform mental health and health services towards deeper expressions of health, equity and justice. She is a Clinical Social Worker with Brigham Psychiatric Services of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She has the following areas of clinical interest: trauma, PTSD, empowerment and social justice perspectives in clinical treatment. She is a member of the Mass General Brigham Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Initiative and is co-chair of the TIC Education and Training Committee of that Initiative.

Mass General Brigham is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
