Course Description

Clear communication between providers and patients is essential to ensure patients get the best possible care. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) are more likely to experience harm caused by adverse events than English-speaking patients because of communication errors.

Please join us to learn what quality leaders can do to remove communication barriers so that all patients are able to fully participate in their health care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain why it is important to address language barriers to provide the safest possible care to patients.
  2. Explain how to access tools and resources available at Mass General designed to remove communication barriers
  3. Discuss when to partner with interpreter services and situations to avoid when caring for patients with limited English proficiency.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for members of the Quality and Patient Safety Committee (QPSC) and staff they work with who will benefit from the training.
