Course Description

Practicing clinicians should be better equipped with the knowledge to screen, diagnose, and manage age-related conditions that impact the course of treatment for HIV.

In particular, HIV clinicians should have up-to-date information that focuses on HIV-specific issues related to diseases of aging. Examples of areas where practice needs to be improved include the understanding and management of conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, COPD, cancer, kidney disease, liver disease, and neurocognitive issues.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Develop new strategies for optimizing anti-retroviral therapy in people with HIV aged 50 or older.
2.  Identify recent advantages in the treatment of chronic illnesses in people with HIV aged 50 or older.
3.  Provide optimal strategies to prevent the progression of diseases of aging in people with HIV.

Each one hour session will include specific objectives. 

Target Audience

This activity is intended for HIV clinicians and caregivers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physicians' assistants.

To complete each of the six sessions, you must view the live, one hour presentation and complete the pre-test, post-test, and evaluation, which will then be archived for on-demand participation.

Faculty

Rajesh T. Gandhi, MD, Course Director

Rajesh T. Gandhi, M.D. is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the Director of HIV Clinical Services and Education at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Gandhi is the site leader of the MGH AIDS Clinical Research Site in the Harvard/Miriam AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and chair of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) HIV-1 Reservoirs and Eradication Transformative Science Group. He is also the Director of the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research Clinical Core (CFAR). Dr. Gandhi is the editor of Partners ID Images, an educational infectious diseases website, and organizer of the HIV Online Provider Education (HOPE) program, an internet-based educational conference series for physicians and nurses caring for HIV-infected patients in resource-limited settings. He is also a Deputy Editor of NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Diseases and NEJM Journal Watch HIV/AIDS. He is a scientific member of the Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents, and the International Antiviral Society-USA Panel on Antiretroviral Drugs for Treatment and Prevention of HIV in Adults.

Virginia Triant, MD, MPH

Virginia Triant, MD, MPH is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a faculty member in the Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine Divisions at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Triant earned her MD from the Yale School of Medicine. She is a practicing infectious diseases clinician in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Her research interests are in the area of clinical epidemiology/population health/outcomes and focus on the intersection between HIV and non-communicable disease complications, with a particular interest in cardiovascular disease. She developed and directs an HIV longitudinal clinical care cohort using data from a Partners HealthCare System-based data registry. Utilizing this cohort, she has led studies on HIV in relation to cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes, risk factors, prevention, risk prediction, and management. The overall goal of her research is to characterize the long-term medical complications of HIV disease to design and implement treatment and preventive strategies across diverse clinical settings.

Jacqueline Chu, MD

Jacqueline Chu, MD is a Primary Care Physician at the MGH Chelsea Healthcare Center, as well as an Infectious Diseases Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is from Peoria, IL, and completed her BA at Harvard College. She attended Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at CWRU, where she started an HIV screening program in a low-income neighborhood of Cleveland, and participated in HIV screenings and linkage programs through the city. She then completed internal medicine residency and her ID fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is interested in HIV screening and improving access to care, and providing HIV care and education.
