Description:
Join us for an engaging presentation discussing best practices for partnering with professional medical interpreters when caring for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). Studies have shown that patients who have a preferred language other than English are twice as likely to suffer from adverse events than patients who speak English. However, there are also studies which show how patients with LEP who are provided with appropriate language access are far more likely to comply with the plan of care and thus have better health outcomes than patients who are not provided with this same access. We work in a busy and sometimes chaotic environment where it can be easy to overlook the fundamental communication needs of patients. This session will provide best practices and examples of access available to Mass General staff.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the various modalities of medical interpretation available for patients and staff
- Examine best practices for working with a professional medical interpreter to communicate effectively with a patient with LEP
- Review technology options available to assist with communication with patients with LEP
Target Audience:
This activity is intended for all Massachusetts General Hospital clinicians interested in learning tactics and best practices for patient experience related discussions
