Join us for an engaging presentation on improving the patient care experience for persons living with dementia. As the US population ages, the number of persons living with dementia is rapidly growing, and persons living with dementia have high rates of emergency department visits and hospital admissions. In this discussion you will learn about the unique challenges of caring for persons with dementia in the hospital setting, tools for improving communication with persons living with dementia, and framework to understand and address agitation in persons with dementia.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia and how the hospital environment may worsen these symptoms
- Summarize how dementia impacts communication and why agitation may be form of communication for persons living with dementia
- Modify verbal communication skills to improve communication with persons living with dementia
- Employ non-pharmacologic approaches to address non-violent agitation in persons with dementia

This activity is intended for all Massachusetts General Hospital clinicians interested in learning tactics and best practices for patient experience related discussions

Dr. Maura Kennedy is the division chief of geriatric emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kennedy’s clinical, education and research endeavors focus on improving emergency care for older adults. At MGH, she leads the emergency department's geriatric optimization task force and serves on the steering committee for the MGH Age Friendly Health System initiative. She is also the president-elect of the geriatric section for the American College of Emergency Physicians, on the Board of Governors for the Geriatric ED Accreditation Program, and adjunct faculty for the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative. She has contributed to local and national guidelines on the care of individuals with dementia and delirium in the emergency department and hospital setting.
