DESCRIPTION
This one hour online presentation will explore the issue of substance abuse and misuse in general has been receiving more attention, as a result of the opiate addiction crisis. The population of patients seen in rehabilitation is one that is at risk for substance abuse, either as a result of pre-injury problems with addiction or abuse, which may have contributed to the injury, or as a result of persistent pain or the multiple biopsychosocial stressors that can accompany living with a disability. Rehabilitation professionals helping patients achieve their best recovery are well positioned to help screen for substance abuse problems and support patients in receiving support services to prevent substance abuse issues from undermining rehabilitation success. Today’s rounds will look at the intesectionality between substance abuse and disabling injuries and identify screening tools, counseling approaches and resources for supporting patients in managing substance use risk.
