DESCRIPTION

This one hour online presentation will be an overview of mindfulness, which is the awareness that emerges from paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment (Kabat-Zinn).  Over the last two decades, mindfulness has gained popularity in the United States with a rapidly growing body of literature. Programs such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) have demonstrated to be beneficial in treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD chronic pain, sleep quality, fatigue, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and improving quality of life. There is now a growing, but still limited research suggesting that mindfulness appears to be feasible and may also be effective in the traumatic brain injury population in reducing symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress, improving mental fatigue, quality of life, perceived self-efficacy, and possibly improving attention. Although the literature is limited, clinicians specializing in the traumatic brain injury population may consider using mindfulness interventions as an adjunct therapy to help modify and restructure cognitive distortions that negatively affect recovery in certain individuals who suffer a traumatic brain injury.
