5th Annual Colorectal Cancer in Africa: Raising Awareness
This is a hybrid program hosted as a one-day webinar and one week in-person session focused on raising awareness about colorectal cancer in Africa. Colorectal cancer – the second leading cause of cancer mortality globally – is preventable with screening and surveillance tools, and most high-income countries have well-established prevention and early detection programs. However most African countries lack structured screening colorectal cancer screening protocols and guidelines, resulting in incomplete epidemiologic data and many preventable cancer cases and deaths. This symposium will focus on understanding the magnitude of colorectal cancer epidemiology and risk factors in Africa and on opportunities for improved screening programs. In addition, speakers will present a multidisciplinary approach to management of colorectal cancer, including initial diagnosis, staging and treatment options (e.g., medical management, surgical intervention, and palliative care). The symposium will also serve as an opportunity to develop collaborations and networking amongst participants involved in the care of African patients with colorectal cancer. The theme is a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients at high risk for colorectal cancer and patients with colorectal cancer hence various specialty tracks have been created: Gastroenterology, Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, Oncology and Nursing. The high-risk disease theme of focus is inflammatory bowel disease.
