Activity Description
This journal club will discuss GI both ends of the Heme/Onc topic of the month. The first topic will be an article reviewing the risk of a patient having an intracranial hemorrhage after minor head trauma while on anticoagulation. The second topic will be two papers covering the derivation of the CISNE clinical decision making tool for discharging febrile neutropenic patients, followed by a head-to-head comparison with the MASC tool.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the key components of a research report and analyze the methodologic section for appropriate subject recruitment, collection of important predictor data, minimization of bias, and logical data analysis. Interpret graphics and tables accurately. Assess the relevance of findings to current clinical care.
2. Integrate data from all aspects of the research report and summarize the findings in a verbal presentation to the journal club group. Detect bias and other ethodologic
weaknesses. Critique the methodology and infer generalizability to other patient populations include those patients seen in our program.
3. Contrast the findings of a new report with the known literature and current clinical practice. Assess and differentiate the impact of the current report in the context of the body of known evidence. Answer the key question whether the new report will serve to move the needle of clinical care and change practice.
