This journal club will discuss GI emergencies. We will discuss recent articles related to two common GI complaints seen in the ED: diverticulitis and appendicitis. We will discuss how the management of these conditions may have changed in recent years and considerations from an emergency provider perspective.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the key components of a research report and analyze the methodologic section for appropriate subject recruitment, collection of important predictor data, minimization of bias, and logical data analysis. Interpret graphics and tables accurately. Assess the relevance of findings to current clinical care.
2. Integrate data from all aspects of the research report and summarize the findings in a verbal presentation to the journal club group. Detect bias and other ethodologic
weaknesses. Critique the methodology and infer generalizability to other patient populations include those patients seen in our program.
3. Contrast the findings of a new report with the known literature and current clinical practice. Assess and differentiate the impact of the current report in the context of the body of known evidence.
